ETF Stream editor Tom Eckett has been named journalist of the year for passive investments at the State Street Institutional Press 2023 awards.
Eckett claimed the prize for his work on pre-hedging, a murky part of the ETF trading landscape in Europe that has received regulatory scrutiny from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and IOSCO.
Antoine Lesne, head of ETF strategy and research for EMEA at State Street Global Advisors, commented: “The passive investment and indexing award looks to recognise journalists who demonstrate an all-round understanding of the sector”.
“For the winner of this category, judges noted the entry shone a light on the highly-technical practice of ‘pre-hedging’ and potential issues this poses for both investors and regulators.”
The awards, which took place on 22 November, recognise outstanding performances in institutional financial services journalism.
Entries are judged by an independent panel of industry professionals. This year’s seven judges included The Investment Association’s director of policy, strategy and innovation Jonathan Lipkin and Redington’s director of sustainable investment Edwin Whitehead.
Sam Ridley, managing director at ETF Stream, commented: “This award reflects ETF Stream’s position as the leading ETF publication in Europe”.
“It is great to see Tom receive recognition for his continued hard work as editor over the past three years. The future looks very exciting for us and I am grateful to have Tom a part of it.”
